Lee Keun-ho, Aya Miyama scoop top AFC awards

Lee Keun-ho and Aya Miyama scooped the AFC Player of the Year and AFC Women’s Player of the Year awards at a glittering ceremony on Thursday.

Lee put in a series of exceptional performances for club and country throughout the year but it was his exceptional displays for Ulsan Hyundai in the 2012 AFC Champions League that helped the 27-year-old attacker claim Asian football's highest individual accolade ahead of Iran legend Ali Karimi and China's Zheng Zhi.

Miyama won this accolade for the second successive year after the 27-year old's influential performances helped the Nadeshiko claim silver medal in the 2012 London Olympics.

Manchester United midfielder Shinji Kagawa (Japan) was chosen as the AFC Asian International Player of the Year while AFC Cup champions Kuwait SC’s Brazilian striker Rogerio De Assis Silva Coutinho won the AFC Foreign Player of the Year award.

The prestigious AFC Diamond of Asia award was presented posthumously to former AFC President and Malaysian sports icon Datuk Seri Setia Raja Tan Sri Hamzah Haji Abu Samah.

Ulsan Hyundad win 2012 AFC Champions League

acl2012final groupcelebrate 300x200

Ulsan Hyundai became the third K-League club in four years to be crowned Asian champions with a 3-0 win over Al Ahli of Saudi Arabia in the final of the AFC Champions League at Ulsan Munsu Stadium on Saturday.
Goals from captain Kwak Tae-hwi, Brazilian striker Rafinha (Rafael dos Santos de Oliveira) and Kim Seung-yong earned last year's K-League Cup winners their first-ever continental crown and a place at next month's FIFA Club World Cup in Japan.
Ulsan were the fourth Korean side in a row to reach the final and Kim Ho-gon's team join Pohang Steelers and Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma in lifting the title after their successes in 2009 and 2010 respectively.
The win was nothing less than Ulsan deserved against an Al Ahli side who were also making their first appearance in the final of the AFC Champions League but who appeared overawed by the occasion.
Ulsan took command early on with Rafinha firing off an effort from the edge of the area seven minutes in while Kwak headed Kim Seung-yong's corner wide three minutes later.
It only took a further three minutes, though, for the Korean side to go in front with Ulsan's prowess from set pieces paying dividends when Kim Seung-yong flicked a free kick into the area and Kwak rose highest to head past Abdullah Al Muaiof.
The goal did little to wake Al Ahli out of their slumber and, although the time spent in the Ulsan half increased, Karel Jarolim's team did little to make it count.
It was at the other end that the majority of the action continued, with Ulsan's Colombian midfielder Juan Estiven Velez trying his luck from range twice in the space of three minutes, but both his efforts were off target.
Indeed, it was Ulsan's complacency at the back that threatened to allow Al Ahli back into the game as the home side gave away possession too easily on several occasions, but only Motaz Al Mosa went close to testing Kim Young-kwang when he shot over the bar with seven minutes left in the half.
Al Ahli shook off some of the lethargy that had hampered their play in the opening 45 minutes, but Ulsan still remained in the ascendancy and, by the 67th minute, they had doubled their lead.
Velez's left footed cross from the right was headed across goal by Kim Shin-wook and Rafinha emerged through a trio of Al Ahli defenders to poke the ball over the line and to send most of the 42,153 fans in Ulsan Munsu Stadium into raptures.
And eight minutes later Kim Seung-yong confirmed the title would be heading back to Korea with a fierce low left-foot drive that Al Muaiouf could do little to keep out.

ACL final to mark end of AFC-FAO campaign against hunger

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)’s joint Asian Football against Hunger campaign this season will end with the grand finale of the AFC Champions League (ACL) on Saturday.
Saudi Arabia’s Al Ahli and Korea Republic’s Ulsan Hyundai will meet in the final to complete the knockout stage of Asia’s most prestigious football championship. Football fans will be urged to unite once again and offer their support to poor Asian communities facing hunger and food insecurity.
This follows the success of last year’s campaign when AFC and FAO raised over US$400,000 during the AFC Asian Cup 2011 in Qatar to finance 43 projects offering concrete solutions to people in need, helping them to feed themselves and build a better life.
Al Ahli and Ulsan Hyundai football club ambassadors, Mansour Ateeq S Alharbi and Kwak Tae Hwi respectively, were recognised for their great efforts in advocating for Asia’s hungry. Other top football clubs who participated in this solidarity campaign include Sepahan (Iran), Guangzhou Evergrande (China), Adelaide United (Australia), Al Hilal, Al Ittihad (Saudi Arabia) and Bunyodkor (Uzbekistan).
“I am thankful to the clubs who voluntarily participated in this campaign, some of whom even made a financial contribution to this noble cause,” said Mr Ingill Ra, Social Responsibility Director of the AFC. “The AFC is not only about organising competitions and developing football on the continent but also our off-the-field initiatives, which have helped to build society and also gained significant attention throughout the world.”
Mr Hiroyuki Konuma, Assistant Director General and Regional Representative for FAO added, “Citizen support is key to steering political attention towards the plight of the hungry people in the world. The AFC Champions League has succeeded in bringing this issue to the attention of millions of football fans. We are proud to stand united with the AFC in the global drive to end hunger.”
During the ACL final between Al Ahli and Ulsan Hyundai, fans will see players publicly pledge their support to the initiative holding campaign banners and flags. 563 million people suffer from hunger and malnutrition in Asia and almost 870 million throughout the world.
Asian Football against Hunger is the first campaign to grace the prestigious AFC Champions League.
Individuals can support the campaign by making a donation at www.endinghunger.org/afc.

Mohamed Aboutreika
Date of Birth: November 7, 1978
Club: Al-Ahly (Egypt)
Country: Egypt

At 33, Aboutreika is still at his peak and has yet to lose his shine. Ahly and Esperance draw in Champions League final first leg

Ahly and Esperance draw in Champions League final first leg

Tunisian side Esperance managed a valuable away 1-1 draw with Egypt's Ahly in the 2012 Orange CAF Champions League final first leg match played in Egypt’s second largest city of  Alexandria.
Waleed Hichri gave the visitors the lead 2 minutes after the break while substitute Elsayed Hamdy equalized for Ahly two minutes from full time. The second leg is to be played on November 17th at the Rades Stadium in Tunis. Esperance enjoy the home advantage and  take an away goal into  the return leg.
Ahly started the first half on attacking note and Hosam Ghaly's long ball missed Waleed Suleiman in the first minute. Esperance closed their defensive area with five players in the midfield. Tunisian keeper Moez Ben Chrifieh stopped Abdullah El Said's shot after 14 minutes, and he was there again for another shot from El Said five minutes later.
Ahly's best chance of the first half came after 33 minutes when Ahmed Fathy's cross from the right side found Mohamed Abou Treika inside the area but his shot came over the crossbar. Defensive style from the Tunisians hindered any more chances to see the first half end in goalless draw.
Right after the restart defender Walid Hichri gave Esperance the lead when he was the quickest to react to Khalil Chamam's corne kick. Ahly pushed all their players in attack searching for the equalizer but the visitors keeper Ben Chrifia was there to stop Geddo and Hamdy's efforts. Abou Treka came closer to score but his shot from three yards was amazingly kept out by Ben Chrifia with his outstretched leg.
It wasnt till the 88th minute when home side  Ahly eventually found an equalizer when Ahmed Fathy’s clever  pass reached substitute Hamdy who shot past Ben Chrifia much to the delight of Ahly fans and relief of the hosts.

Kuwait SC win 2012 AFC Cup

ksc group celebration 300x200

Kuwait SC were crowned AFC Cup champions for the second time in four years when Ion Marin's side handed Arbil a 4-0 defeat in the final at the Iraqi club's Francouse Al Hareeri Stadium on Saturday.
A full house turned out to support Nizar Mahrous's side as they sought to become the first Iraqi side to win the AFC Cup, but the Kuwaitis continued their hoodoo over the Iraqis to lift the title and emulate the achievement of Jordanian club Al Faisaly.
Kuwait SC's win comes three years after their first success in 2009 and a year after losing in the final to Nasaf from Uzbekistan, but there was to be no such disappointment for Ion and his side this time around.
The two sides had met in the knockout stages of the competition on two previous occasions – in 2009 in the quarter-finals and in the semi-finals last year – and on both occasions Kuwait emerged victorious.
And it was not to be third time lucky for Arbil as Chadi Hammami gave Kuwait SC the perfect start when he converted from the penalty spot just two minutes into the game and, with three minutes remaining in the first half, Rogerinho (Rogério de Assis Silva Coutinho) doubled the lead and effectively killed the game.
Abdulhadi Khamis then scored on the break with just seven minutes remaining to put the result beyond any doubt and with just seconds left Hammami slotted home to complete the rout.
Arbil tried to find a way back into the game in the second 45 minutes and they went close through efforts from Halkard Mohammad Taher and Saleh Sadeer but there was little the home side could do to deny Kuwait the glory.
Arbil's hopes of a success were hit early in the game when Walied Ali was hauled down in the area and referee Valentin Kovalenko from Uzbekistan had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot.
Hammami stepped up to the spot-kick and made no mistake, striking the ball right footed past Sarhank Mohsin Nader, who guessed correctly but was unable to reach the perfectly struck effort.
Kuwait SC continued to exert control over proceedings with Fahad Al Enezi forcing a fine save from Nader with a long range effort while Arbil only managed to threaten from distance as the Kuwait defence held firm.
With three minutes remaining of the first half, Kuwait SC hit forward on the break with Issam Jemaa collecting a long punt forward on the right of the penalty area before rolling the ball through to the on-rushing Rogerinho, who tapped in from inside the six yard box to double his side's lead.
Arbil had been second best throughout the opening 45 minutes but came out for the second period in determined mood.
Taher saw his effort go just over the bar two minutes after the break while Sadeer's free kick was saved by Musab Al Kandari only for Ivan Bukenya to steal in on the rebound, but his effort failed to find the back of the net.
With Arbil growing increasingly desperate to find a way back into the game, the home side pushed further forward and it came as little surprise when Kuwait SC struck on the counterattack.
In the 83rd minute, Khamis struck with aplomb with a right footed effort and with barely seconds on the clock Hammami rolled the ball home to claim his second and complete a remarkable night for Kuwait SC.
