Gomaa powers Ahly to beat Ismaily


Veteran defender Wael Gomaa notched a late goal to aid Al-Ahly beat archrivals Ismaily in their Orange CAF Champions League Group ‘B’ clash on Sunday. It served Ahly’s maiden victory at the mini-league stage of the competition and leaves Ismaily without a point and perched at the bottom of the standings. Gomaa, who extended his stay with the ‘Red Devils’ last week netted the match winner in added-on time to give Ahly a famous victory over their fellows.

Youngster Mohamed Talaat broke the deadlock on 58 minutes of the closely contested encounter held at the Cairo International Stadium. Midfielder Mohamed Abougreisha levelled for the ‘Samba Boys’ on 80 minutes before Gomaa grabbed the winner in the latter stages of the game. Algerian giants JS Kabylie lead the pack on the stangdings with six points, Ahly trail in that order on four points, Nigeria’s Heartland FC has a point with Ismaily at the bottom pointless.
