Qatar raises 2022 temperature by playing it cool

Outside the humid evening temperature had not dipped very far below 40degC. Yet the players of Al Sadd and Al Rayyan ran, chased, bustled and hustled through their Stars League clash as if immune to the dangers of dehydration.
The wingbacks raced forward optimistically in support of every attack, the strikers pursued lost causes relentlessly and the goalkeepers bounced and pounced around their areas as if it were a World Cup tie.
That they could all do so owed everything to the technological breakthrough which, little but rich Qatar hopes, will persuade FIFA to award them host rights – against all the traditional odds – to the World Cup finals in 2022.
Unobtrusive, around the flanking pitch walls of the Al Sadd Stadium, ran a decorative ring of small black spheres. But these were not design features but key features of a system which cools the air temperature for players and fans.
This is the future and, as the busy players of Al Sadd and Al Rayyan demonstrated to their fans and officials – as well as to this writer and more than 100 other members of the international media – it works.
Al Sadd was always an appropriate club to invest in the initial system. This is the so-called “Real Madrid of the Gulf,” the richest club in Qatar and most successful with more than 300 cups glistening, glinting and gleaming on the trophy room shelves inside the stadium.
But the power of tomorrow stands 100 metres away outside the stadium walls. This is a power plant which drives 6,000 tonnes of refrigeration from chilled water through an underground pipeline to the stadium and out through the 150 vents which fringe the pitch and are replicated beneath every seat around the ground to keep the stands as cool as the pitch.
As the teams sheet noted, temperature at pitch level was a mere 19deg - low enough to keep any gloved Nordic midfielder happy.
This is believed to be the first such system in the world and was installed and started up just over a year ago at a cost of around $20m. Already researchers have developed refinements which will ensure, say the Qataris, that by 2022 the system can be carbon-zero.
For Qatar’s World Cup bid team, this is progress with a double legacy benefit which should appeal to FIFA. Not only can they provide cool temperatures for players and fans at matches, at training and in the fan parks but it can be exported to countries – largely in the developing world – confronting similar challenges.
Cool, indeed.

No white elephants in Qatar says 2022 FIFA World Cup bid

Qatar presents the most fascinating of the nine bids for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups between which FIFA’s executive will decide in Zurich on December. Whether the differences can outweigh the known strengths of the other contenders, when world federation president Sepp Blatter and his 23 colleagues begin their deliberations, is another matter. They will all have heard at first hand the ambitions of the Gulf state which has far more money than any other bidder to spend on what is, simultaneously, a three-handed regional, national and sporting promotional drive. Also at hand will be the report of the six-man inspection team which arrived today in the capital, Doha, for a three-day analysis.

Qatar is the last of the nine bids to welcome the FIFA inspectors, headed by Chilean federation president Harold Mayne-Nicholls. Running against the gigantism trend afflicting major sports movements Qatar - with a population of 1.5m - would be the smallest nation ever to host the finals, smaller in size and population than Uruguay in 1930.But 2022 will be a vastly different from 1930. The Qataris know they have to convince FIFA that they can build the infrastructure, are refining the technology to ensure cool-temperature stadia and training grounds and can dismiss ‘white elephant’ fears with stadia which can be dismantled and shipped off to the developing world. Also, they hope it may just tickle the fancy of Blatter and Co – in the cutting-edge competition with the Olympic movement – to bring the World Cup to the Middle East for the first time.
Bid chairman Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Khalifa al Thani, welcoming the FIFA inspectors, said: “We have been very honest about our bid,” and promised: “There will be no white elephants.”Cooling technology to counter the high June and July temperatures could be demonstrably zero-carbon and that the projected transportation network would be “fully discussed” to show “the compact nature of our bid. ”He added: “Today we do not meet FIFA requirements in terms of accommodation but by 2022 we will have 30,000 rooms or more, in excess of FIFA requirements. ”Concluding, Sheikh Mohammed said: “We have always had a few challenges and we have been very honest about them. Of all the bids the aspect of our weather is a challenge specific to Qatar but we will address all of this head-on. “To achieve the Middle-East dream FIFA must have full confidence and that is what are going to try to do to show that Qatar is the best possible partner for FIFA in 2022. ”Mayne-Nicholls thanked the Qataris on the inspectors’ behalf for their welcome, particularly considering the local holiday period. He promised: “Everything in our report will be done in a very objective way to put together all the information the exco members need to be sure about the decision they will be taking.”

Expect amazing stadiums for Qatar 2022 World Cup

The bid unveiled five eco-friendly, carbon-neutral stadia to media fanfare in Dubai in April. The five stadia are: Al-Khor, Al-Wakrah, Al-Shamal, Al-Rayyan and Al-Gharafa .
Each of the five stadiums will harness the power of the suns rays to provide a cool environment for players and fans by converting solar energy into electricity that will then be used to cool both fans and players at the stadiums. When games are not taking place, the solar installations at the stadia will export energy onto the power grid. During matches, the stadia will draw energy from the grid. This is the basis for the stadiums’ carbon-neutrality.
The upper tier of each of the five stadiums will be removed after the tournament. They will then be donated to developing countries that lack sports infrastructure. During the FIFA World Cup™, if we win the right to host, the capacity of each stadium will be able to accommodate between 40,000 and 50,000 fans. When the tournament ends, the lower tiers of the stadia will remain in Qatar, able to accommodate between 20,000 and 25,000 fans, suitable for local football, while the upper tiers will be sent to developing nations.
We see sending the stadiums to developing nations as an integral part of our bid, as doing so will allow for the further development of football on the global stage. Along with the stadiums, we plan to make the cooling technologies we’ve developed available to other countries in hot climates, so that they too can host major sporting events.

Qatar 2022 reveals innovatives new stadiums and unique cooling technologies

At a much-anticipated unveiling at Sport Accord, Dubai - the world's largest sport convention - Qatar 2022 announced details of a number of its stadia, and the world-first, carbon-neutral technology it will use to cool stadiums, fan fests/zones and training sites if Qatar is chosen to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup – paving the way for the first ever cooled outdoor global sporting event. Three new state-of-the-art stadiums were unveiled today:

Ø Al-Shamal – a 45,120 capacity stadium located in the north of Qatar, on the edge of the Arabian Gulf. The stadium’s bowl shape design is derived from the “traditional dhows” – the local fishing boats of the Gulf. Around 10% of spectators for Al-Shamal are expected to arrive via the Qatar-Bahrain Friendship Bridge, which will be the longest free-standing bridge in the world.

Ø Al-Khor – a 45,330 capacity stadium located in the north east of Qatar, set in its own park setting and designed as a stunning asymmetrical seashell motif. Some spectators will be able to see the Gulf from their seats while players will benefit from a flexible roof providing shade over the pitch.

Ø Al-Wakrah – a 45,000 capacity stadium located in the south of Qatar, set in a park setting that includes a themed swimming pool, spa zone, spots facilities and shopping mall. The main stadium entrance will face onto a beautiful plaza that will create a sense of one large extended park.

In addition, Qatar 2022 unveiled two existing stadiums that will be expanded if Qatar wins the right to stage the FIFA World Cup:

Ø Al Rayyan – located 20km northwest of Doha, its current capacity will double to 44,740 via a modular upper tier stand. A special membrane will double as a giant screen on the side of the stadium projecting flash match updates and tournament information.

Ø Al Gharafa – located close to Doha, its current capacity will also double to 44,740 via a modular upper tier stand. The stadium facade will be made up of the colours of all the countries qualifying for Qatar 2022, symbolising the friendship, mutual tolerance and respect of the FIFA World Cup and Qatar.
Qatar 2022 Chairman His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani said: “Today’s unveiling of our state-of-the-art football stadia and innovative cooling technology is the latest step in our quest to bring the FIFA World Cup to the Middle East for the very first time in 2022. A FIFA World Cup in Qatar will leave a powerful and lasting legacy, bringing together nations and cultures through our shared passion for football.“These plans show just how serious, innovative and focussed we are about hosting a FIFA World Cup that will deliver a fantastic experience for players, fans and the media. Our stadiums will have zero carbon cooling equipment utilising solar technology to ensure the temperature is no higher than 27 degrees Celsius, ensuring optimum playing conditions and a comfortable environment for fans.

This same environmentally friendly, carbon-neutral technology will ensure training sites, fan fest and fan zones are also cool and comfortable. What we have unveiled today is a world first, and as part of Qatar's committment to delivering an historic legacy we will share this groundbreaking technology with the rest of the world.

”Qatar 2022 Chief Executive, Hassan Abdulla Al Thawadi, added: “All our state-of-the-art stadia will be linked to a brand new metro system and totally integrated with a comprehensive shuttle bus network, allowing fans to travel to games by public transport. Fans will be able to watch more than one game in a day while staying in the same accommodation throughout the tournament.

"We have also designed our new stadia with legacy front of mind and, with their modular design, can be reduced in size after the World Cup to fit local football and community requirements and, in some cases, transported abroad for permanent use. What we have unveiled today is just a foretaste of the much wider plans we will be unveiling in the coming weeks.”Qatar aims to bring the World Cup to the Middle East for the first time in the history of the tournament. FIFA’s Executive Committee will vote on the locations of the 2018 and 2022 World Cup Finals on December 2, 2010, in Zurich
