Former continental champions, ASEC Mimosas have retained the Cote d’Ivoire Premier League title with two games to spare. ASEC cruised to their 24th title in 50 years despite losing 1-2 to AS Denguele last Saturday in their week 24 encounter, after closest contenders JCAT were held to a one all draw at home by ASC Ouraghio on the same day. The Abidjan-based club moves to 45 points, seven points richer than JCAT with two games remaining, which means that the outcome of the two games will have no impact on the first position as ASEC are assured to finish as winners.
Bitterest rivals, Africa Sport remain in the hunt for the runners-up ticket despite being to a barren draw at home by Stade d’Abidjan, with 34 points on sixth position. The feat is ASEC’s ninth title in 10 years and confirms their status as the most successful club in the history of Ivorian football. The Mimosas were also continental club champions in 1998 and will represent Cote d’Ivoire in the 2011 Orange CAF Champions League.
